Work Experience Programme for Students

At The Mayflower we are committed to our education programmes and as part of these we offer three work experience placements a year.

Unfortunately, due to the time involved in organising and supervising these two week placements for Year 10 students we are unable to offer any further or longer term assignments for college and university students.

How to apply for a placement

We accept applications from Year 10 students from schools within the Hampshire and Dorset regions. We give preference to schools who are part of the TRIDENT or WEX Online work experience schemes.

To apply for a placement please write your letter, addressing it to Justine Taylor, Work Experience Co-ordinator, detailing why you would like to come to the Theatre, what you hope to gain from the programme, which school you are from and what dates your work experience is to take place between. Please advise us if your school is part of the TRIDENT or WEX Online schemes.

Selection

We make our annual selections in November* and will write to all applicants advising of the outcome.

*Please note: We have now made our selections for 2009.

If you have been selected to have a placement at The Mayflower we will invite you in for a brief interview before you join us to ensure that all the necessary paperwork is complete and to give you a copy of your work schedule.

About the Theatre

As you may be aware, The Mayflower Theatre is a "receiving house" and not a "producing house". This means that all the shows we stage are touring shows that come to us fully formed, i.e., all the sets, costumes, wigs and make-up are already completed when they arrive here. So, at the Theatre we do not have costume and set design or make-up and wigs departments. Our backstage crew assist the touring crews with the sets and our dressers assist the touring company with the costumes.

Due to heath & safety reasons we would not be able to allow you to work backstage at any time during your work experience, however we will take you on a full guided tour of the backstage areas, including the fly tower and the dressing rooms.

Work experience programme

So that we can give you a full experience of how the Theatre is run, and ensure that you get as much as possible out of your time with us, our students spend time in every department getting a feel for what they do and how they contribute to the Mayflower Theatre as a business.

Below is an example of a typical work experience programme for a two week period. As you can see, you will spend time with each department, including working with the Front of House team on a matinee performance (so you get to see one of the shows!) and you also have two days where you can choose which department you liked the best to spend extra time with.
